The Air Here is Thick

This painting explores the weight of West Texasthe thick, dust-laden air that clings to the skin and lungs, a landscape that is at once harsh and intimate. Inspired by the poem of the same name, it reflects a place that was made for me: where the land’s heaviness carries memory, labor, and resilience, and where one’s presence feels both small and inevitable. The cotton lungs become a symbol of enduring in a space that shapes you, holds you, and ultimately feels like home.

Ephemeral Hymn

Petals whisper, colors sigh,

Moths like spirits brush the sky.

Dahlias dance in twilight’s gleam,

Zinnias hum a secret dream.

Beauty fades, yet magic stays,

In wilted stems and soft decay.

Life and death entwine and spin,

Where endings end, beginnings begin.

“Beauty is terror. We want to be devoured by it.”

I spend hours at the farm gathering skygarden dahlias and zinnias, alive with the soft blur of West Texas hummingbird moths. Each bouquet feels like a celebration, a small altar to pollinators and petals alike. But on my counter, I watch them bow to time.. petals curling inward, colors fading, stems surrendering. In their dying, they offer another kind of beauty, a resurrection found in letting go. This painting lives in that space between bloom and collapse, joy and loss. p.s. it is impossible to capture these beautiful neon pigments I’m using- just trust it’s more lovely in person.
